すぎやまこういちといえば、「ドラゴンクエスト」の楽曲を担当している作曲家である。
1980年代前半生まれの僕にとって「ドラゴンクエスト」は数あるテレビゲームのうちの一つではなく、特別な意味を持っている。
中川翔子は
- 「人生はドラクエが教えてくれた」
- 「ドラクエを義務教育に」
などと言っているが、子供のころからドラクエをプレイしながら育ってきた我々の世代にとって、この中川翔子の発言は決して素っ頓狂な妄言ではない。

冒頭で書いたようにすぎやまこういちといえばドラクエの人だ。しかし、今回の訃報を受けてすぎやまこういちのウィキペディアを見てみたら、ものすごい経歴の人だった。
まず、驚いたのはすぎやまこういちが東大出身だったこと。さらには開局したばかりのフジテレビに入社。
東大→フジテレビ
って超エリートである。
そして、フジテレビでは「ザ・ヒットパレード」を企画し大ヒット。
フジテレビ退社後は、作曲家として沢田研二がボーカルの「ザ・タイガース」や「ザ・ピーナッツ」に楽曲を提供。
他にも「亜麻色の髪の乙女」や「帰ってきたウルトラマン」の主題歌など誰もが知るヒット曲を連発している。
つまり、ドラクエの楽曲を担当する以前の段階で超大御所なのだ。
先見の明がすごい
ちなみにドラゴンクエストの1作目は1986年だから、当時で既に55歳である（現在の岡村靖幸とほぼタメ）。
これって、凄いことだと思う。
「ドラゴンクエスト」の発売当初はそもそもゲーム音楽というジャンル自体がまだ確立されていなかった時代である。テレビゲーム市場がこの先発展していくのかもまだ誰もわからない時代に55歳の大御所が楽曲を担当するってすごい。
